This exhibition considers sixty years of Italian cinema seen through the "still" images of the
iconographic treasure trove of each individual film. It offers a different way of discussing a subject
which encapsulates the extraordinary story of this evocative medium from the post-war period to
the present day. "The magnificent hundred" is a show conceived not just as a chance to renew
acquaintance with the faces of so many unforgettable films, but also as a review of a substantial
slice of Italian history. This concept has led to the creation of a cross-section exhibition which
invites readings on several levels. There is the cinema of the greats, such as the incomparable
directors from Pasolini to Rossellini, Bertolucci to Monicelli, Fellini to Antonioni and Zeffirelli to
Visconti (all of whom figure in the exhibition). There are the artists, exponents of a school of
worldwide renown, such as Ballester, Nistri, Casaro, Brini, Symeoni, Iaia, Cesselon and Ciriello.
And let's not forget the photography - or the set photographers - also including a rich collection of
historical images from the archives of the greatest Italian reporters. The seven sections of the
show provide a comprehensive visual exploration of the subject. There are over 300 items on
display, including posters, original sketches, playbills, film covers, set photographs, screenplays
and scripts, scores, soundtracks, costumes, brochures, volumes and various memorabilia. The
published catalogue (in 24x29cm format and with 220 pages) includes all the items on show,
together with four critical essays by experts in the respective fields. A film is available to
accompany the exhibition.
