This exhibition was presented at the MART museum in Rovereto, as part of the “Future Present”
Festival of contemporary arts put on by the Cultural office of the Autonomous Province of Trento. It
surveyed the landmarks of the professional career of Bernardo Bertolucci (Parma, 1941), a great
Maestro and leading figure in the history of cinema over the last forty years. Although influenced by
the poetry of Pasolini at the start of his career when very young, Bertolucci quickly developed a
signature style of his own, through intense involvement with the figurative arts, musical tradition
and literary culture. Indeed, striking features of his cinema are the collaborations with musicians
such as Ennio Morricone, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Gato Barbieri and David Byrne, his encounters with
literary influences from Alberto Moravia and Stendhal to Jorge Louis Borges and Paul Bowles, and
his dialogue with its highly intense figurative traditions. The “Paper dreams” exhibition, which was
opened in the presence of the Maestro himself, is an original rereading of Bertolucci's career as an
artist, seen through the publicity material for his films – posters, film covers, original sketches, and
artwork for the soundtracks – sourced from the Maurizio Baroni Archive. The work of some of the
best Italian commercial artists (Renato Casaro, Piero Ermanno Iaia and Sandro Symeoni) has
brought the official images of the films back to life, documenting all sixteen of Bertolucci's films, from
“The Grip Reaper” (1962) to “The Dreamers” (2003).
