"The cinema is my hobby, my hobby is my work, my work is my life, and my life is a film". Thus
Renato Casaro (Treviso, 1935) characterizes his profession, after forty years of dedication to the
world of cinema as a poster artist. Casaro is the youngest and one of the most celebrated
exponents of a school which has made a decisive contribution to the success of a great many
films. He came into the industry as long ago as the 1950s, and after an apprenticeship at the
Favalli studio in Rome he made a name as one of the most skilful "painters" in cinema. By virtue of
his amazing hyper-realism, which looks to classical painting for inspiration, he developed into the
artist of choice for producers worldwide, especially in the 1980s and 1990s. It was during that
period that he created the posters for some of the great works of cinema (The Last Emperor, The
Sheltering Sky, Dances With Wolves, Rambo, Nikita, and Once Upon a Time in America). This
exhibition presents over a hundred original sketches, from the artist's own archive and from
important public and private collections, in many cases alongside the actual printed poster. The
works are interspersed with a series of "tributes" which Casaro has dedicated, in recent years, to
the world of the big screen. All the items in the show are included in the dual-language (Italian/
English) catalogue featuring critical writings on the artist and a first analytical catalogue of his work
for the cinema. The exhibition is scheduled to visit two venues from autumn 2011.
