Robot. “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?”
In collaboration with the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna University, Pisa, and the Bruno Kessler Foundation
Exhibition in preparation for 2010
Exhibition directed by Paolo Dario and Mario Zen
Catalogue by esaExpoedizioni

International robotic research is opening up new possibilities. The most fascinating challenges lie in the field of human-robot interaction, as researchers seek to endow “machines” with ever more advanced sensory-motor and cognitive capabilities. This is a world which is in a continual state of flux, one that we will have an increasing need to get to grips with. A major exhibition dedicated to the subject is planned, to visit two European cities from spring 2010. The event is devised and organized by esaExpo, in conjunction with the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna university, Pisa, and the Kessler IRST Foundation, Trento. It is motivated by an awareness that the subject of “Robots” can arouse intense interest in a diverse audience, which the show's choice of approaches to the subject aims to stimulate, from historical perspectives right up to the most cutting edge international research. Over 250 works and objects have been selected, to make an evocative display divided into ten sections: “Automata”, “Before the Robot”, “Science, technology and the future, “History and literature, “Art”, “Philosophy and theology”, “Cinema”, “Fashion, clothes and advertising”, “Comics” and “Games”. The show is equipped with video installations and multimedia stations. The subtitle of the exhibition is a tribute to the literary oeuvre of Philip K. Dick (1928- 1982). The exhibition is accompanied by a 240-page dual-language (Italian/English) catalogue of all the materials on display, with critical essays introducing each section.
