The International Triennial of Wood
Trento 2008
With the Association of Craftspeople and Small Businesses of the Province of the Trentino region,
the Autonomous Province of Trento
the Trento Chamber of Commerce, and the Museum of the customs and traditions of the people of
Trentino
Its pliability and elasticity, its sustainability, its energy-saving capabilities and its sheer beauty have
always drawn architects, designers, engineers and builders to wood. The Association of
Craftspeople and Small Businesses of the Autonomous Province of Trento was inspired to
dedicate a triennial event to this gift of nature, in which visitors were guided on a journey of
discovery of the remarkable story of wood. esaExpo co-ordinated the overall design of the event,
whilst also creating the three principal exhibitions: Trentino style: furniture and tradition at
Palazzo Roccabruna, The bridal chest: trousseaux and linen chests from Alto Adige and
beyond in the Marangonerie building at Buonconsiglio Castle and, in the same location, Eight
designers challenge wood, an innovative show in which artists of international renown –
Alessandro Guerriero, Interactiondesignlab, Giulio Iacchetti, Donegani-Lauda, Alfredo Haeberli,
Martino Gamper, Andrea Branzi and Pascal Tarabay – tackled the medium of wood, working jointly
with local craftspeople to create the “Bridal chest”, a new take on the dowry cassone. The
signature sculpture for the Triennial, by the architect Gianleo Salvotti, situated in Piazza Duomo,
demonstrated the ability of wood to marry the antique with the future and the natural with the hi-
tech. The event catalogue, which is published by esaExpo, may be obtained directly from the
Trentino Association of Craftspeople and Small Businesses. |
